About Us » SEI Certification
The Safety Equipment Institute (SEI) offers independent third-party testing and certification of gas detector tube units. The SEI certification is widely known as one of the strictest safety product certification programs in the world and replaces the earlier National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) testing and certification program. Manufacturer’s gas detector tube units earn the SEI mark after two things occur:(1) SEI’s independent testing laboratory determines that the units have successfully undergone performance tests and meet the ANSI/ISEA 102-1990 (R2003) American Standard for Gas Detector Tube Units – Short Term Type for Toxic Gas and Vapors in Working Environments.(2) SEI’s quality assurance auditor completes an extensive audit of the manufacturer’s operations.SEI certification, like NIOSH certification in the past, prohibits interchanging detector tubes and pumps of different manufacturers because of the potential for errors and product failure. Under the SEI program (and the earlier NIOSH program), detector tubes and pumps are certified as a system.Additionally, manufacturers are audited on an annual basis to maintain their certification.Currently, detector tube manufacturers have the opportunity to certify tubes for 21 substances; Gastec Detector Tubes has SEI certification for all 21. In fact, they were the first detector tube manufacturer to receive all 21 certifications.
